Homemade hot chocolate is one of those things that spoil you forever. Once you make it at home, you just can’t go back to those powdered packets of hot cocoa anymore.

Ingredients for hot chocolate

  • 2-3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 Cup milk
  • 1 cup chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons whipped cream
  • 2 tablespoons raw sugar

Instruction for hot chocolate

  1. Finely chop the chocolate into small pieces. The pieces have to be able to dissolve quickly in the liquid. Set aside.
  2. Bring the milk to a medium simmer in a small, thick-bottomed pot over low heat. To prevent the milk from sticking to the pan’s bottom, whisk occasionally.
  3. If desired, flavor the milk with herbs or spices, bring it to a simmer, turn off the heat, and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes. Put the liquid through a strainer, then add it back to the pot and cook once more.
  4. Add the chocolate, vanilla, powdered sugar, and salt, and whisk vigorously until the chocolate has melted
  5. Heat for another 4 minutes, constantly stirring, until the chocolate is completely melted.
  6. Serve hot with a heavy topping of whipped cream and chocolate powder garnishing.

Serving Suggestions

If you like, top each mug with 1 to 2 tablespoons of whipped cream (or whipping cream) or heavy cream. If you have pre-made or canned whipped cream, use it or simply add either heavy or whipping cream.

Sprinkle some cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, or gratings on top. You can also top with 1 to 2 vegetarian marshmallows or chocolate sauce or caramel sauce or chocolate sprinkles.

Serve Hot Chocolate immediately while hot or warm.

Perk Up Your Hot Chocolate!

Many flavors can be added to chocolate. Here are some ideas:

  • A classic combination of peppermint and orange
  • Lavender, bay leaf, or star anise
  • Chinese five spice for a slight kick
  • Chai spice blend
  • Add vanilla and chili peppers, as the Aztecs did
  • Or cinnamon, like modern-day Mexicans

What if you have leftovers?

You can freeze it and blend it with a shot of espresso to make your own homemade frappuccino. Alternatively, you can add some more milk and blend it for an instant chocolate milkshake.

How long does it last?

The best way to enjoy hot chocolate is warm and freshly brewed. However, you can let the beverage cool fully (without adding cream) and then keep it in the refrigerator for a few days in a sealed container. Be careful not to boil or burn the hot chocolate as you slowly rewarm it on the stovetop. Alternately, reheat in the microwave in 20-second intervals while stirring.
